triathlon tuesday
I finished…
Last weekend the date finally came – and I’m glad to say it’s now over. After over 3 months of training, a lot of excitement and anxiety, I was able to cross the finish line. Here’s a little recap of the experience:
- Waking up at 5am wasn’t cool – but no worries, I put enought caffeine in my system before the gun sounded to keep me going for a long time (my leg is still twitching.)
- The weather was a concern going into the race due to TS Fay, but Saturday turned out to be a perfect morning. The organizers did an incredible job – if you ever think about signing up for a race in central florida, I would highly recommend buttar.com.
- It was cool getting to experience the race with my buddy Chris (pictured below.) I convinced him only a month before the race to signup, and he tore it up.
- The lake was cleaner than I expected, and the swim wasn’t as taxing as I thought it would be. (we think it was shorter than the advertised 400 meters – I certainly wasn’t complaining.)
- The bike segment was definitely the highlight of the race. The wind was light and the course was flat – if you’ve ever been cycling you know that makes for a good ride.
- The run sucked – there’s no other word for it. The entire run course was on a dirt road that was still under water from Fay, and my legs felt like jello when I got off the bike.
- About 1/2 mile into the run I finally caught up with Chris (he had the fastest bike split in our division.) I asked him how he was doing and his response – “I just threw up in my mouth twice.” That was the motivation I needed.
- There was nothing like having our friends and family to scream and cheer for us during the race – we can’t thank you enough.
- My final time was 1:13:42 – My goal was 1:17:00, so I was pleased with my time. I also managed to slip into the top five overall (we’re proudly displaying our hardware below.)
- Overall, it was an incredible experience, and I plan on doing another in the spring. In fact, there are quite a few that are signing up for one in Jacksonville in June of 09 – let me know if you’re interested and we’ll get you the details.
The first pic is me crossing the finish line begging for the pain to stop; the second is Chris and me holding our well-deserved hardware. Happy training…

You & Chris were triathalon studs. It was quite impressive and an accomplishment you both should be very proud of!
